Bullying

At St Annes College Grammar School, we are confident in stating that bullying is not a feature of daily life at SACGS.

This is not because children are perfect — they are not — but because of the culture we have deliberately built and consistently uphold.

Many of our pupils join us having experienced environments where differences were not always respected or where concerns were not addressed effectively. As a result, they arrive with a clear understanding of how easily individuals can be singled out.

Our pupils recognise that every child has differences, vulnerabilities or unique characteristics — and that it would be easy, in any setting, to use those differences negatively.

At SACGS, they make a conscious and collective choice to do the opposite.

Protective, Not Divisive

Rather than exploiting difference, our pupils:

• Value and respect individuality
• Actively protect and support one another
• Show kindness as a default, not an exception

This creates a strong, shared understanding that everyone belongs, and that difference is something to be safeguarded, not targeted.

Pupils as Active Safeguards

Our pupils play a central role in maintaining this culture.

They are:

• Explicitly taught what constitutes bullying, including subtle or relational behaviours
• Encouraged to speak up early, before concerns escalate
• Confident that staff will listen and act immediately
• Willing to challenge unkindness and support peers

This results in a community where pupils do not ignore issues — they take responsibility for preventing them.

Early Intervention, Not Escalation

We recognise that, as children, misunderstandings and disagreements can arise. What distinguishes SACGS is how these are managed.

If something begins to “bubble”:

• It is identified quickly
• It is reported without hesitation
• It is addressed promptly and effectively

Concerns are recorded and monitored, ensuring that patterns cannot develop. As a result, issues are resolved early and do not develop into sustained or harmful behaviour.

A Culture of Trust and Safety

Pupils trust that:

• They will be taken seriously
• They will be supported
• Action will be swift, fair and consistent

This trust underpins everything. It ensures that pupils feel safe to speak, confident to act, and secure in the knowledge that they are part of a community that looks after one another.
