Inclusion at SACGS

Inclusion at SACGS

St Annes College Grammar School aims to provide an inclusive learning environment in

which all pupils, including those with SEND or English as an additional language, are

supported to access the curriculum and develop independence as learners.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

St Annes College Grammar School supports pupils who speak English as an additional language (EAL), including pupils joining the school from international or refugee backgrounds.

Teachers adapt their teaching to support language development alongside subject learning so that pupils can access the curriculum and participate fully in school life. Support may include additional explanation of key vocabulary, structured learning tasks and opportunities for pupils to develop confidence in speaking and writing in English.

The school has successfully supported pupils who joined the school with limited English to make strong academic progress and transition successfully to further education.

Safeguarding and inclusion are central to the ethos and daily practice of St Annes College Grammar School. All staff recognise their responsibility to promote the welfare of pupils and to maintain a culture of vigilance, where concerns are identified, shared and acted upon promptly.

The school provides a calm, structured and supportive environment in which pupils feel safe, valued and able to learn. Relationships are a key strength; staff understand that behaviour is a form of communication and respond with appropriate support, ensuring that pupils’ individual needs are recognised and addressed.

High expectations are consistently upheld alongside appropriate levels of support. This enables pupils to engage positively with learning, develop confidence and make sustained progress over time. Early intervention and professional curiosity underpin safeguarding practice, ensuring that potential concerns are managed effectively and do not escalate.

Staff work collaboratively and engage in reflective practice to continually improve outcomes. The school recognises the importance of staff wellbeing in sustaining high-quality provision and maintaining a safe environment for pupils.

As a result, pupils feel secure, develop resilience and are able to re-engage with learning, supporting both their personal development and academic progress.

Safeguarding at SACGS is embedded, proactive and effective, ensuring that pupils are well supported both academically and emotionally.
