Preparing young people for confident, meaningful adult lives
Preparation for Adulthood is at the heart of the SACGS Sixth Form experience. Across all pathways, we aim to equip students with the knowledge, confidence, independence and practical skills needed to thrive beyond education.
We recognise that success looks different for every young person. For some, this may mean progression to university or higher education; for others, employment, supported internships, vocational training or increased independence within the community.
Our provision is designed around the four key Preparation for Adulthood outcomes identified within SEND guidance:
Employment & Future Pathways
Students are supported to develop employability, responsibility and workplace confidence through:
- Supported work experience and volunteering
- Enterprise and vocational learning
- Career exploration and guidance
- Employability qualifications and accreditation
- Community-based projects and real-world responsibilities
Where appropriate, students may also access supported internships, vocational placements and pathways linked to future employment sectors.
Independent Living
We help students develop practical life skills and increasing independence through opportunities including:
- Travel training and journey planning
- Budgeting, shopping and money management
- Cooking and meal preparation
- Organisation, routines and self-management
- Personal responsibility and decision-making
Learning is often delivered through real-life experiences and community-based opportunities rather than solely classroom-based activities.
Community Inclusion & Relationships
Students are encouraged to become active, confident participants within their wider community through:
- Community projects and volunteering
- Group activities and teamwork
- Social communication development
- Leadership opportunities
- Building confidence in unfamiliar environments
We place strong emphasis on helping students develop positive relationships, self-advocacy and a sense of belonging.
Health, Wellbeing & Emotional Development
Student wellbeing underpins all aspects of Sixth Form life. We support young people to develop emotional resilience, confidence and healthy lifestyles through:
- Relational and trauma-informed approaches
- Emotional regulation support
- Outdoor and physical activities
- Low-arousal and supportive environments
- Consistent pastoral care and mentoring
Our aim is to ensure that students leave SACGS not only with qualifications, but with the confidence, resilience and life skills needed for adulthood and future success.
