Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) & Careers Guidance (CIAG)

Preparing students for life beyond school.

At SACGS, education is about far more than examinations alone. We are committed to preparing every student for adulthood, future employment and independent life through a carefully planned programme of Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) and Careers Information, Advice and Guidance (CIAG).

Our approach begins early and develops throughout the Senior School years, helping students build confidence, independence and a clear understanding of their future pathways.

๐ŸŒฑ Preparation for Adulthood (PfA)

Preparation for Adulthood is woven throughout school life and focuses on developing the practical, social and emotional skills students need for adult life.

Students are supported to develop:

  • Independence and self-confidence
  • Communication and social interaction skills
  • Emotional resilience and self-regulation
  • Organisation and time-management skills
  • Decision-making and problem-solving abilities
  • Confidence in everyday life situations

For some students, particularly within our Alternative Pathway at Key Stage 4, this may include:

  • Home Economics and food preparation
  • Life Skills and independent living skills
  • Social Skills development
  • Travel awareness and personal safety
  • Functional communication and practical problem solving
  • AQA Unit Awards and personalised accreditation pathways

Our aim is to ensure every student leaves SACGS feeling prepared, capable and optimistic about their future.

๐ŸŽฏ Careers Information, Advice & Guidance (CIAG)

Careers education at SACGS is personalised, supportive and aspirational.

We help students explore their strengths, interests and future ambitions through a structured careers programme that supports informed decision-making and future planning.

Students benefit from:

  • Individual careers guidance and support
  • Careers education within the curriculum
  • Discussions about future pathways and aspirations
  • College, Sixth Form and vocational guidance
  • Preparation for interviews, CVs, applications and next steps
  • Support with college and post-16 transition planning

We recognise that success looks different for every young person, and we work closely with students and families to identify pathways that are realistic, ambitious and suited to individual strengths and needs.

๐Ÿซ College & Post-16 Opportunities

Students are given opportunities to explore a wide range of future pathways through direct contact with colleges, training providers and employers.

These opportunities include:

  • Visits to local colleges and Sixth Forms
  • College open events and transition visits
  • Representatives from colleges and training providers visiting SACGS
  • Careers assemblies and talks from visiting professionals
  • Guest speakers from a range of industries and careers
  • Former students returning to share experiences and advice
  • Discussions around apprenticeships, vocational routes and higher education

These experiences help students better understand the opportunities available to them and support informed, confident decision-making about their future.

๐Ÿ’ผ Work Experience & Volunteering

We believe young people benefit enormously from meaningful real-world experiences.

Students may have opportunities to take part in:

  • Work experience placements
  • Community volunteering opportunities
  • Enterprise and fundraising activities
  • Leadership and responsibility roles within school
  • Practical experiences linked to career interests and future aspirations

These opportunities help students develop:

  • Confidence and independence
  • Communication and teamwork skills
  • Responsibility and reliability
  • Organisation and problem-solving abilities
  • Greater awareness of workplaces and future careers

Work experience and volunteering also help students build valuable life skills and strengthen preparation for further education, employment and adulthood.

๐ŸŒ Real-Life Experiences

Where appropriate, students may also access:

  • Employer encounters and visitors
  • Community experiences
  • Educational visits linked to future careers and life skills
  • Duke of Edinburghโ€™s Award opportunities
  • Outdoor education and wellbeing activities

These experiences help students develop resilience, confidence and a stronger understanding of the wider world.

๐Ÿ’™ A Personalised Approach

Because of our small class sizes and nurturing environment, students receive highly personalised guidance and support.

Staff know students well and are able to:

  • Recognise strengths and talents
  • Build confidence and aspirations
  • Provide tailored support and encouragement
  • Help students navigate future decisions successfully

We believe every student deserves a future filled with opportunity, purpose and confidence.

๐ŸŒณ Our Aim

At SACGS, we prepare students not only for examinations, but for adulthood, employment, relationships and life beyond school.

We strive to develop young people who are:

  • Independent
  • Resilient
  • Aspirational
  • Socially confident
  • Ready for their next steps
